At around 8:30 PM on Friday evening, crews from the Grande Prairie Fire Department responded to a “significant” structure fire at the Grande Prairie Farmers’ Market located near 101 St. & 101 Ave.
According to GPFD, the nature of the building construction and wind made this an extremely difficult fire to action and has resulted in extensive fire damage to the roof and attic. Smoke, heat and water damage is present throughout many other parts of the structure.
Gaining access to the attic from multiple areas outside the structure allowed crews to successfully get the fire under control, re-enter the structure and mitigate further losses within.
A cause of the fire, or estimate of damage has not been released yet.
“The GPFD is grateful for the commitment the team showed last night including numerous off-duty staff and the CGPRFS, who all worked with diligence and dedication, understanding the significance of this structure to the community, “ said Fire Chief Mark VanWerkhoven.
A message was also posted to the Market’s Facebook from heartbroken staff.
