A solution-based company based in Edmonton is helping employ people that have gone through difficult times, whether it be victims of abuse, mental health issues or substance use.
The startup is called Hiregood and now has over 165 staff members after starting with just 5. The impact of the company’s work has not gone unnoticed. In his May 2023 State of the City address, Mayor Amarjeet Sohi praised Hiregood’s contributions to Edmonton, acknowledging the significant improvements they’ve made in public safety and cleanliness.
I spoke with the CEO of Hiregood, Jody Phelan. During the interview she speaks of personal growth of staff through mentorship, the struggle it was to be viewed as a legitimate business, and how the resiliency of the human spirit brings gifts including a community that stands united.
According to Phelan, the company now grosses 7 million dollars and is starting a pilot project in Calgary.
