On May 10, a celebration of Indigenous culture including powwow dancers and Métis jiggers was held at St. Dominic Catholic High School in Rocky Mountain House, with a host explaining to the audience the meaning behind the dances.
Grade 12 student Daisy Smallboy organized the event, which also saw students from neighboring West Central High School and Pioneer Middle School invited.
According to organizer Shannon Mah, it was always a vision for Smallboy to see such an event come to fruition.
“Daisy did the work. She went out to the community and invited them to not only help support her vision, but she also wanted them to participate,” says Mah. “We’re pretty proud of her because she put so much work into this””
Following the performances, students were invited to a free outdoor BBQ feast.
