Last week the Alberta government announced major upgrades and investments for highways and bridge projects that Budget 2024 includes. Budget 2024 is set to provide $1.9 billion for planning, design and construction of major highway and bridge projects.
The investment aims to improve Alberta’s competitive advantage by constructing and enhancing our economic corridors, which will facilitate important connections to markets both within and outside of Alberta. These projects will enhance the safety and efficiency of our provincial highway network, resulting in reduced traffic congestion and less time spent by Albertans stuck in traffic.
Devin Dresheen, Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister stated there are over 100 capital projects and highway upgrades throughout the province included in Budget 2024.
Budget 24 affirms our commitment to new and ongoing highway improvement projects including the Terwillegar Drive Expansion. As well as other important projects across the province.
Investing in upgrading the provincial road and bridge network can create thousands of job opportunities, enhance traffic flows, and support the development of the province’s major economic corridors. These investments are crucial to ensure that communities throughout the province have the necessary infrastructure to transport their goods to new markets and manage the higher traffic volumes that come with a growing population.
Tim Bennett, Senior Vice Chair for the Alberta Motor Transport Association stated these investments are vital to ensure communities across the province have the infrastructure they need to get their goods.
Alberta is the fastest growing province in Canada, so it’s imperative we get to work today planning, designing and building the highways and bridges we need for tomorrow. This investment from the Government of Alberta will strenghten the province’s transportation network and expand our economic corridors so we can build our businesses, boost our exports, and create good-paying jobs.
By investing in highways and bridges, Alberta’s government is not just working at improving transportation; but also laying the groundwork for a stronger, more connected Alberta, ensuring prosperity for generations to come.
